Municipality

The municipality of Engenho Velho (7,100 ha) is located 400 km of Porto Alegre.

Engenho Velho was in 1920 a tiny settlement, mostly owned by Captain Antonio Valério and his big family. They were joined by two Italian families, Camelotti and Tesser, who established a sawmill, and, later, by the Luzzatto. In the 1940s, the original sawmill, locally known as "Engenho", was deactivated, therefore the name of Engenho Velho (Old Sawmill) given to the settlement.
The municipality of Engenho Velho was established by State Law No. 9,619 promulgated on 20 March 1992. In 1996, a conflict broke out with the Kaingang Indians, whose reserve constituted more than 50% of the municipal territory.
