Municipality

The municipality of Crissiumal (14,233 inhabitants in 2016; 36,311 ha) is located 500 km north-west of Porto Alegre, on the border with Argentina, here river Uruguai.
The municipality is composed of the districts of Crissiumal (seat), Esquina Gaúcha (est. by Municipal Law No. 58 promulgated on 28 December 1955), Lajeado Grande (est. by Municipal Law No. 179 promulgated on 9 July 1957), Planalto (est. by Municipal Law No. 59 promulgated on 28 December 1955), and Vista Nova (est. by Municipal Law No. 851 promulgated on 11 December 1987). The district of Candelária (est. by Municipal Law No. 54 promulgated on 12 December 1955) was separated from Crissiumal by State Law No. 4,624 promulgated on 2 December 1963 to form the new municipality of Boa Vista do Buricá.

Crissiumal was established in the early 1930s by Domingos Meneghel, soon joined by Adolfo Rinaldi, Ivo dos Santos, Albino Löwe, Domingos Maccari, Bernardo Dickel, and Miguel Schutz, with their families. The new settlement was named after a species of forest bamboo called "criciúma" by the natives. The first mass was celebrated on 6 January 1936, while the chapel was erected on 23 January 1936.
Crissiumal soon competed with Três Passos for municipal emancipation. Crissiumal was eventually elevated to a district of the new municipality of Três Passos, established by State Decree-Law No. 716 promulgated on 28 December 1944; in 1950, though, the district was most populated than the municipal seat. The municipality of Crissiumal was established by State Law No. 2,553 promulgated on 18 December 1954, and inaugurated on 20 February 1955.

Crissiumal is self-styled the Gaúcha capital of food industry. More than 30 companies are involved in Pacto Fonte Nova, the municipal program of food industry development. Crissiumal is among the first producers of milk in Rio Grande do Sul (70,000 L/year).
