The flag of Canguçu is composed of a rectangle horizontally
divided into three equal parts, green, red and yellow. The flag is charged in
the center with a white circle inscribing the municipal coat of arms.
The
coat of arms is composed of a Portuguese shield horizontally divided into two
fields.
The upper field, white, is charged with a red cross, recalling the
Portuguese from Azores who colonized the area. Beneath the cross, a blue wavy
stripe represents Canguçu's hill. In its lower part, a green stripe represents
agriculture.
The lower field, all white, is charged with a spotted jaguar,
representing the origin of the name Canguçu, surmounting "CANGUÇU" written in a
semi-circular pattern.
The shield is superimposed to two crossed lances,
recalling the Ragamuffin heroes.
Beneath the shield a red scroll is inscribed
"1812 Justiça – Igualdade – Perfeição 1857". The scroll ends with a wheat spike
and a maize cob, present-day's main products of local agriculture.
The shield
surmounted by a mural crown with three fortified castles and eight crenels. The
crown represents the town of Canguçu.
