Municipality

The municipality of Caiçara (5,215 inhabitants in 2014; 18,920 ha) is located 440 km north-west of Porto Alegre.

Caiçara, originally known as Lagoa da Figueira (Figtree's Lake) for a lake and a tree once used as landmark by travelers, was originally settled by Italian colonists.
The municipality was established by State Law No. 5,067 promulgated on 19 October 1965, separating from Frederico Westphalen, and inaugurated on 19 May 1966.

The flag of Caiçara is quartered red-blue-yellow-green by a white saltire and charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms inscribed in a white lozenge.
