The municipality of Benjamin Constant do Sul (2,307 inhabitants, 13,199 ha)
is located 400 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Benjamin Constant do Sul
was established in 1927 by Ricardo Ducatti. Most colonists came from Guaporé,
Bento Gonçalves, Caxias do Sul and other towns of the Serra Gaúcha.
The
district of Benjamin Constant do Sul was established within São Valentim in
1959. The municipality of Benjamin Constant do Sul was established by State Law
No. 10,645 promulgated on 29 December 1995.

The municipality is named for the engineer and politician Benjamin Constant
Botelho de Magajhães (1836-1891).
Benjamin Constant entered the Military
College in Rio de Janeiro in 1852. As a professor of mathematics, he was
introduced in 1857 to scientific positivism by the "Traité de géométrie
analytique" and the first volumes of the "Cours de philosophie positive"
published by the French philosopher Auguste Comte. In 1867, he campaigned for
Comte's Religion of Humanity. Constant was among the founders of the Rio de
Janeiro Postivist Society on 1 April 1876, which he left in December 1881.
In
1887, Constant, member of the Military Club, asked the club's president, General
Deodoro de Fonseca, to publicly supported the abolition of slavery. This
resulted in a petition to Princess Isabel asking the armed forces not to be
commissioned to capture fleeing slaves.
In spite of being an "unfaithful and
incomplete" positivist, Constant efficiently contributed to the positivist
transition from the Empire to the Republic in 1889. He understood that the
military uprising, aimed at overthrowing the decadent Imperial regime, was in
search of an ideological support. Accordingly, the Republic of the United States
of Brazil was pacifically proclaimed on 15 November 1889. Constant was appointed
Minister of War by Deodoro de Fonseca, head of the provisory government.
