About the flag

The municipality of Assaí (14,954 inhabitants in 2020; 44,035 ha) is located 400 km north-west of Curitiba.

Assaí was established, as Assailandia (from Asahi, Japanese for Rising Sun), in 1932 by Miyuki Saito, Itissuke Nishimura, Utaro Katsuda, Tokujiro Tsutsui and Junzo Nagai, who cleared plots from Fazenda Tręs Barras, which had been acquired by BRATAC – Sociedade Colonizadora do Brasil Ltda. BRATAC was established by Japanese public and private shareholders to foster Japanese colonization of North Paraná.
The municipality of Assaí was established by State Decree-Law No. 199 promulgated on 30 December 1943 and inaugurated on 28 January 1944.

The flag of Assaí is divided by eight yellow stripes superimposed with blue stripes placed two by two vertically, horizontally, per bend and per bend sinister, starting from a central yellow rectangle inscribing the coat of arms.

The coat of arms is composed of a shield of the first style used in Portugal under French influence.
The mural crown that surmounts the shield, argent with eight towers, only five of them being visible in perspective view, indicates the town as the seat of a county.
Azure (blue) is a symbol of justice, nobleness, perseverance, zeal and loyalty.
The heraldic sun is represented as a human face with 16 points, 8 rectilinear and another 8 wavy. The sun is a symbol of eternity, greatness, power, providence and illustrious nobleness.
The serration formed by five triangles or evokes the Serra Morena, whose highest point is located on the municipal territory.
The coat of arms evokes the municipality's original name, Assialandia, meaning "Land of the Rising Sun", a tribute to the Japanese colony that fostered the development of the region.
The fess wavy represents river Tibagi.
The shield is supported by a fructed coffee branch and a flowered cotton plant, representing the products offered by the fertile soil.
Beneath the shield, the scroll azure (blue) is inscribed in letters or the motto "LEALDADE - NOBREZA - RIQUEZA - PODER" (Loyalty - Nobleness - Wealth - Power) surrounded by years "1932" (year of foundation) and "1944" (year of emancipation).
