Introduction: Royal Family of Bahrain

The Al Khalifa family have been the Sunni ruling royal family of Behrain since 1783. The family was part of an Anizah tribe initially located in Kuwait in the 18th Century. They managed to gain power with British support who were making an effort to stabilize the area. They have maintained their power, sometimes brutally, up until today. In 1999, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa became the Emir of Bahrain. In 2002 he proclaimed himself King of Bahrain. Thus the Kingdom of Bahrain is a constitutional monarchy today.
Under its constitution, the King is head of the ruling family of Bahrain and assisted by his Ruling Family Council (مجلس العائلة الحاكمة). In 1973, the Bahrain government was restructured making the existing Ruling Family Council the formal new Royal Cabinet of the state. The administrative heads of the Royal Cabinet were given the rank of minister. Roughly half of the serving cabinet ministers of Bahrain are members of the Al Khalifa royal family. According to the Bahrain Constitution, the King appoints the members of both the board of the Ruling Family Council and the Royal Cabinet.
