Presentation of Bratunac

The municipality of Bratunac (21,619 inhabitants in 2013, 8,359 in the town of Bratunac; 29,300 ha) is located on the border with Serbia, here river Drina, 10 km of Srebrenica.

Bratunac was first mentioned in a document dated 4 November 1381, which mentioned "prope Cerca piragio de Bratano", "Bratano, a crossing on the Drina located near Crnče. The Turkish census from 1513 lists Bratina as part of the Zvornik sandjak.
Bratunac boomed after the set-up of a tobacco market in 1886 and of a facility for purchase and processing of tobacco in 1911, and of the building of a bridge over Drina in 1926.
The municipality of Bratunac was established in 1927.

Flag of Bratunac

The Municipality of Bratunac adopted its new symbols in October 2021

The symbols of Bratunac were adopted on 18 October 2021 by the Municipal Assembly, among seven proposals submitted to an international competition organized by the municipality of Bratunac.

The symbols were designed by Dragomir Acović, the most respected Serbian heraldist and designer, among other things, of the symbols of Republika Srpska, Belgrade, Banja Luka and Kragujevac.

Coat of arms of Bratunac

The arms are described as follows.
The coat of arms of the municipality is a shield composed of a field azure charged with a cross made of thorny intertwined branches argent. The intersection of the cross' arms is superimposed with a red rose with golden seeds and green sepals.
The middle coat of arms is identical to the lesser one. surmounted by a stone walled rampart crown with three visible merlons and with two medieval escutcheons bearing the coat of arms of Dinjičić (per bend of seven sable and or) between the merlons. The shield is supported dexter right by St. George the Great Martyr and Victorious dressed in late Roman military armor over a blue tunic with peribrachions or, with turquoise blue trousers and matching footwear, clad in red military paludament, fastened on his right shoulder a small shield argent charged with a cross gules, with a sword girded around his waist and an almond-shaped gold-plated shield argent charged with a cross gules on it sinister side, and , sinister, by St. Despot Stefan Lazarevic, known as the High, crowned and dressed according to the canon of Byzantine despots of the late Palaeologus, including a dark red circular azdi with peribrachions or, a gold and jewel-decorated loros and a red cloak, carrying a scroll argent in his raised left hand; both saints have a halo or around their heads. The two supporters hold a black and gold-chained spear closer to the shield hoisting the square flag of Republika Srpska, embroidered with tassels or (dexter), and of Bratunac (sinister), embroidered with the same tassels.
The flag of Bratunac has the same content as the shield of the lesser coat of arms. The pedestal of the coat of arms is a natural green valley between two conical hills, at the base of which is a handful of deciduous autumn oak branches or, with a scroll or inscribed in black letters "1399 - BRATUNAC - 1927", and - below all - a blue wavy stripe.

Even before the new flag, the municipality had a flag, white with the old emblem.
