Mexico's independence from Spain was initiated on September 16, 1810 when Father Miguel Hidalgo gave his speech, the Grito de Delores. He was later arrested, executed and beheaded. His followers carried this flag symbolizing war to the death without quarter - that their enemies should feel "the suffering of Hidalgo."
This flag was also reported to have been used at the Alamo.
