Mostly hoisted on school flag poles, this flag was used primarily in northern and central Vietnam during the French colonial era.

Following the Japanese overthrow of the French colonial government, the first national government was established under Premier Tran Trong Kim. The national flag was a yellow background with three red stripes one-third the length of the flag.
