Description of the flag

Columbia adopted an official flag on May 11, 2023. A contest was announced in January 2023, for which 41 qualified designs were submitted. The designs were reviewed by the Columbia Arts Council and reduced to 3 finalists. An online public vote in April was won by a design from local resident and business owner Bryson Leach.

Description of flag by designer: "The flag design was created to symbolize Columbia’s interwoven history, diversity, and leadership, among its citizens and its place in the world. It features a two-toned field of blue over red, representing Columbia’s presidential history while paying homage to the state of Tennessee and its flag. A horizontal wave of blue and red stripes across the middle represents the Duck River, with the weaving of red and blue representing Columbia’s diversity and its place in Civil Rights history (starting in 1946). Finally, a white star in the upper left corner represents Columbia as the county seat and its place in technological, industrial, civic and community leadership."

Flag of unknown status

[possible Flag of Columbia, Tennessee] image located by Valentin Poposki, 26 August 2011
Status of flag uncertain (see below)

A red flag with a seal centered.

A very interesting situation happened with an unidentified flag which contains the inscription "COLUMBIA, TENNESSEE / 1808". I found this photo couple of years ago and  when I got an answer from the City of Columbia, Tennessee that they responded that they don't have and never had a city flag, even when I sent them this photo. The Assistant City Manager and the City Historian researched through the city files and claim that the City governing body never adopted any flag and never authorized use of any flag that suppose to represent the city.

As a result of our discussion we agree that we present this image as an unknown flag claiming to be of Columbia, TN, with city official comment that they never have a flag, hoping that some of our visitors would have some piece of information.

If anybody have any knowledge about this flag please write us, and we'll pass it to the City of Columbia, as I promised.
