Description of the flag

A dark blue flag with a four pointed star, counterchanged red and white.

The City of Jennings is a diverse community of 15,000 residents, located ten minutes from downtown St. Louis and ten minutes from Lambert Airport. Incorporated as a city in 1946, the Jennings community has a history dating back to 1839, when James Jennings moved here from Virginia, purchased a large tract of land and began farming. The community began to grow in the 1800's as the railroad made the area more accessible to residents of St. Louis City.

The flag of the city can be seen on a photo on Flickr website at www.flickr.com/photos/10903227@N06/1205079444/. The text says, "A Jennings city flag, designed in 1964 by an eighth grade girl, hangs on display at the Jennings Historical Society."

I mailed the City Clerk for confirmation of the photograph. She was kind enough to forward it to the people of the historical society who responded:
"Yes, your photo is indeed the flag of the City of Jennings, MO. In 1964 the Northside Bank installed a flagpole in front of the bank building only to discover the city had no flag. They sponsored a flag design contest in the schools. Roberta Elfrink, an 8th grade student at St. Louis DeMarillac Catholic School was the winner of the $100.00 US Savings Bond. The winning design was chosen by the city council and is still in use in front of all city government buildings. Jennings, in St. Louis County, Missouri. was incorporated in 1946.

In 1996 the words JENNINGS MISSOURI INCORPORATED 1946 were added above and below the Northstar.

The NORTHSTAR. Jennings is the first city North of the City of St. Louis. We are on I-70, seven miles from the St. Louis Arch, Lambert Airport and Clayton, the county seat. Red, white and blue, not only the USA but at that time, the two area high school colors were navy blue and white and red and white, thus no favoritism was shown to either school. The bank building is now owned and used by the Jennings School District.

Cheryl Balke, the city clerk, sent me a very detailed photograph of the current version of the flag and permission to use it on the site. On the matter of the lettering she added the following explanation: "The flag is dyed, so the design does show through on both sides, but the words are backwards on the reverse side."

"In 1964, the old North Side Bank (now, a Bank of America) decided to install a flag pole at its site on West Florissant Avenue, with space for U.S., Missouri and city flags, said Linda Schmerber, with the Jennings Historical Society. "However, incorporated in 1946, Jennings did not have a flag. So bank president Albert R. Naunheim contacted then Mayor Oliver Koeneman, offering to organize and provide prizes for a flag contest to design a city flag," she said. The winner - who received a $100 savings bond - was Roberta Elfrink, then an eighth-grader at the old St. Louise deMarillac Catholic School. "Her design was a solid navy blue background with a single centered red and white North Star," Schmerber said. That flag was revised in 1996, the community's 50th anniversary, adding white block words "Jennings Missouri Incorporated 1946.""
