The Gonfalon

"The gonfalon was approved by the solution 144 of city council convocation at March 3, 1996. It is a rectangular canvas with a ratio of the sides: 1:1 (size of a panel pursuant to the measurement standard 100?100sm). In the center of the gonfalon is an or cross, the size makes which one 1/3 values of a panel. The cross partitions a panel on four isometric parts. A upper-left-hand part (from the spectator) - red, lower right - black, and two other - white colours. The facing and return parties are identical."

"The modern emblem was approved by the solution 144 of city council convocation at March 3, 1996. In an argent field are gules-sable clothed sacred Borys and Glib wich hold or cross. Sacred Borys and Glib symbolize outstanding historical city past as a large craft center and northern outpost of Kyiv, and also one of oldest churches built in the city. The or cross historically symbolizes city as one of most ancient centers of religious life of Kyivs'ka Rus' and availability an ancient monastery near the city. The gules widely common during Kyivs'ka Rus' and means bravery and force, boldness, love. Sable means guard, wisdom, depth and mystery of life, grief. The affiliation gules and sable symbolically transmits tragedy of Borys and Glib who was killed by brother from approve idea of christian love. The argent symbolizes purity, faultlessness and uprightness."

The City

"The first mentions refer to 946. Since the X century it was a residence of princes of Kyiv. The special significance in history the town got after the killing of the brothers Boris (in 1015) and Glib (in 1021) by Svjatopolk. They became the first saints of Kyiv Rus'. In 1076 and in 1115 in Vyshhorod there was built a temple-museum with a sarcophagus of the saints."
