About the Flag

It is a very unusual Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a red-white-yellow vertical tricolour, having a yellow scroll overlapping the central stripe.

Coat of arms

[Cabanas de Viriato commune CoA]

Shield Azure, a mount issuant Maroon, crowned by a warrior Proper with a round shield and an upright gladius. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: "VILA DE CABANAS DE VIRIATO"
Another version displays a yellow scroll with black inscription and a golden (!) mural crown. That one is due to the golden crown surely not the official version. The background colour also varies.
On flag the background colour is Argent (= white) and the mount is Vert.
Meaning:
The warrior is a representation of a local monument, displaying the Lusitanian chieftain Viriathus (Port.: Viriato), who lived from 180 until 139 BC and led successfully the resistance against Roman invaders. On demand of César de Sousa Mendes, a Portuguese minister, the commune Cabanas (= huts) was renamed to Cabanas de Viriato in the 20th century.

Flag and arms most likely have never been approved by the Comissão de Heráldica da Associação dos Arqueólogos Portugueses (CHAAP).
