Coat of arms

The arms are Argent issuant from a base Vert emphasized Sable (sic) charged with a fess wavy Azure fimbriated Argent a sweet chestnut Proper between two watermill wheels Gules. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE CASTANHEIRA DE PERA". "castanheira de pera" means (or rather seems to mean) "chestnut's pear" though the latter element is not depicted in the arms. Rightfully so, for (according to this page the word "pera" in this case does not mean "pear" (which would be the partly homophonous "pêra", in unambiguous spelling) but it is rather a corruption of "pedra" ("stone"). The "chestnut" part of the name, however, is canting.

Flag and coat of arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário do Governo : I Série in 1935.04.30.

Version without Coat of Arms

Plain (monocoloured) Portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have variations without arms: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.
Jorge Candeias, 18 Jul 1999

Castanheira de Pera e Coentral United Commune

Coentral was established as an independent commune in 1691, it belonged - together with Castanheira de Pera - since 1895, definitely since 1899 to Pedrógão Grande municipality. Due to the foundation of a wool fabric in Castanheira de Pera both communes formed a separate municipality in 1914. Both communes merged in 2013 due to the reorganisation of administration and formed the Castanheira de Pera and Coentral United Commune (Portuguese: União das Freguesias de Castanheira de Pera e Coentral).

[Castanheira de Pera-Coentral (2002 - 2013) CoA] image by Sérgio Horta, 5 Jan 2008

The arms are Argent a snow well Sable masoned Argent between two chestnut branches Vert fruited Or and in base a nanny goat passant Gules emphasized Or. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "COENTRAL"
Meaning:
" Coentral" means something like " coriander grove" (" coentro" = " coriander/cilantro" ), but this meaning is not apparent in the arms (though every thing else is.) Since Castanheira de Pera Commune itself doesn't seem to have adopted arms yet, that's one more complete PT municipality in terms of communal flags.
António Martins-Tuválkin, 5 Jan 2008

Flag and arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário da República: III Série in 2002.07.12.

Presentation on Coentral
