Coat of Arms

Blazon: på raud botn ein gull trillingstreng med ormeband-skurd.
In English: Gules three barrulets dancetty or.
Apprvoed by the crown-prince-regent's resolution of 9 August 1957 after a drawing by Hallvar Trætteberg, after a previous idea by Magnus Hardeland. [c2j87]
Årdal is a heavy industry and power plant region and the triple zigzag line symbolizes the electrical power. The "ormeband-skrud" is more or less a "worm-ribbon ornament" - as the dragons and lyndworms were depicted ornamented with in the ancient Norwegian wooden churches.
