Berkel en Rodenrijs municipality

Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 17.307; area: 18,90 km². Settlements: Berkel (seat) and Rodenrijs.
Flag adopted by municipal resolution on 29 Sep 1961.
Description of the flag: Two equally wide horizontal stripes of bluie and white, with in the canton a yellow square with a red eight-pointed star.
For centuries a horizontal blue over white flag had been used; it was felt that this was too common in the Netherlands. By adding a characteristic element from the Coat of Arms - the red 8-pointed star, reminding of the merger in 1855 of the municipality of De Tempel with Berkel en Rodenrijs - a clearly distinguishable flag was created.
