Official name: Jirnsum (Dutch: Irnsum), Boarnsterhim municipality, Fryslân province; used to be in the former municipality of Rauwerderhem, along the railway Leeuwarden - Heerenveen (station Grouw/Irnsum). 1958: 975 inh.; 1974: 1130.
Village nickname: Kattekneppelers (catclubbers; a cat was put in a barrel, people threw clubs against the barrel, and after a while it burst, and when the slightly uneasy cat flew away clubs were thrown at it; any "lucky" person hitting the cat was the "kattenkoning" (cat-king). In 1870 this sporting event was forbidden.
Jirnsum: Coat of Arms: in red a silver fess with a blue clover- or Mauritius cross. This is based on the arms of the former municipality
