Osijek is proud to have educated two Nobel Prize laureates, Lavoslav Ružička (1887-1976, Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1939) and Vladimir Prelog (1906-1998, Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1975), who both attended secondary school in Osijek, where they got interested in chemistry.
However, the Studies of Chemistry started in 1961 with the establishment of the Pedagogy Academy. The Chair of Chemistry was established with the establishment of the Faculty of Pedagogy in 1977. The current Department was established in 2005.

The Division of Applied Mathematics was established in 1993, and in 1999 the current Department was the first integrated University Department in Croatia.

The Department uses several emblems that seem to be part of the same set, the main one consisting of the blue drawing of a hanging bridge with a stylized sun spiral over it. Some derived emblems use the sun as the initial "O" (for odjel) and the "chain" of the brigde as the initial "M" (for Matematiku) with the full Department's name inscribed.
