About the flag

The flag is a banner of the arms, and the arms of Helsinki is older than 1967.
The name of Helsinki in Swedish is Helsingfors. About 7.5 % of the city's population has Swedish as their first language. Helsinki was founded in 1550 and became the capital of Finland in 1812 (before this, the most important city in Finland had been Turku (in Swedish: Åbo)).

A pennant or streamer with the Helsinki charge can be seen in Helsinki too, the image of the shield takes up the hoist end, tilted like it is meant to be vertically hoisted, while the fly is parted along the pennant in blue and white.
