Presentation of Calvarrasa de Abajo

The municipality of Calvarrasa de Abajo (1,146 inhabitants in 2012; 2,816 ha) is located 10 km east of Salamanca. The municipality is made of the town of Calvarrasa de Abajo and of the new settlement of Nuevo Amatos. The Matacán airport is partially located on the municipal territory of Calvarrasa de Abajo.

Calvarrasa de Abajo was mentioned for the first time in 1260 as part of the Salamanca Archdeaconry. The village was then known as Calvarrasa de la Naya, as opposed to Calvarrasa de Genestal (today, Calvarrasa de Arriba). Calvarrasa de Abajo belonged to the Peña del Rey "cuarto", one of the four administrative divisions of the Land of Salamanca.

Symbols of Calvarrasa de Abajo

The flag and arms of Calvarrasa de Abajo are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 24 September 2012 by the Municipal Council, signed on 30 November 2012 by the Mayor, and published on 17 December 2012 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 241, p. 75,538 (text).
The memoir supporting the symbols, dated 29 September 2008, was written by Juan Pablo Quevedo y Llorente, President of the Spanish Society of Heraldry and Vexillology and Director of "Instituto Borbone de Heráldica Municipal", and Juan Carlos Navarro Gazapo, corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Heraldry and Genealogy. The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular panel, in proportions 1:1, white with two blue stripes at the upper and lower borders of the panel, in height 1/10 of the flag's height. In the middle is placed the municipal coat of arms in full colours.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Or a fess sable surrounded in chief and base by two eight-pointed stars gules. 2. Azure two keys per saltire the one argent and the other or over waves argent and azure [Crown not mentioned].

The first quarter represents the two settlements forming the municipality, separated by the road, also a symbol of progress. The keys represent the St. Peter church, while the waves represent river Tormes.
The symbols were officially presented on 12 July 2013 (announcement).
