Presentation of Tolox

The municipality of Tolox (2,186 inhabitants in 2015; 9,400 ha) is located 60 km west of Málaga.

Tolox was first mentioned in 883, when its castle was seized by the revolted Muladi Omar Ben Hafsœm, who fortified it. The original castle was probably built by the Phoenicians. Suppressed in the late 15th century, the castle is remembered by a few walls.
Since the early ages, water from the sources and fountains known as amargosas (from amargoso, "bitter") have been known to the inhabitants of Tolox for their healing properties. A local chemist, José García Rey, provided the scientific description of the waters, defining different varieties as alcalino-bromuradas, amónico-sulfuradas, and crenato-ferromagnesianas. The spa (website), inaugurated in 1869 and suppressed in 1906 by a flood, was subsequently rebuilt by Manuel del Rio. The spa became a noted vacation place for local politicians, artists and bull-fighters.

Symbols of Tolox

The flag of Tolox (photo, photo) is horizontally divided green-white-blue with the municipal coat of arms in the middle. Neither the flag nor the coat of arms appear to have been officially registered.

The coat of arms of Tolox is divided in four quarters, each of them representing an significant component of the municipality.
The first quarter represents Pico Torrecilla (1919 m), the highest peak of western Andalusia. The peak is always white, covered with snow in winter and by the reflection of the sun on its white stones in summer.
The second quarter features a Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo Boiss.), a tree endemic ton southern Spain and northern Morocco.
The third quarter features a main source of local income, oranges.
The fourth quarter represents the fountain supplying the spa of Tolox with mineral water.
