Presentation of Quijorna

The municipality of Quijorna (3,221 inhabitants in 2014; 2,571 ha; municipal website) is located in the south-west of the Community of Madrid, 40 km of Madrid.
Quijorna was established in the early 14th century on the Castillejo hill, 3 km of its present site. In 1480, Quijorna was listed as a small hamlet part of the Community of the Town and Land of Segovia. The village was subsequently transferred to the Counts of Moya and the Marquesses of Chinchón.

Symbols of Quijorna

The flag of Quijorna (photos, photo) is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 31 July 1997 by the Government of the Community of Madrid and published on 15 October 1997 in the official gazette of the Community of Madrid, No. 245, pp. 11-12 (text), and on 7 November 1997 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 267, p. 32,671 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: In proportions 2:3. Panel horizontally divided in three stripes, the upper, red, the median, green, and the lower, yellow. The width of the green stripe is the double of the width of the two other stripes. In the center is placed the municipal coat of arms.

The flag is described in more detail in the Regulations of Protocol and Ceremonial of the Municipality of Quijorna (text), adopted on 28 January 2003 by the Municipal Council.
The Regulations also include the usual prescriptions on the use of the symbols.

The Royal Academy of History found the proposed flag "perfectly acceptable".

The coat of arms of Quijorna is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 22 November 1989 by the Government of the Community of Madrid and published on 28 December 1989 in the official gazette of the Community of Madrid, No. 308, p. 4 (text), and on 17 January 1990 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 15, pp. 1,573-1,574 (text).
The coat of arms is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Per fess, 1a. Or an eagle sable, 1b. Or a Portuguese oak vert, 2. Gules a tower or. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The eagle is taken from the arms of the Counts of Chinchón, once lords of Quijorna.
The Portuguese oak (quejigo) refers to a possible etymology of the name of the town, "a place planted with Portuguese oaks". It also recalls the presence of holly oaks, mentioned in Las relaciones históricas geográficas hechas por iniciativa de Felipe II.
The fortified tower recalls the El Castillejo hill, which might have been the first settled place in the municipality.
