Description

A caricature of 1926 by O. Garvens in Kladderadatsch, reprinted in Kuhn 1991 [kuh91], shows several flags signifying the ideas of different political parties for a 'compromise flag'. Although never real proposals, they show the unbridgeable differences of the parties, and caricature the many compromise flag or unity flag proposals of the time. Each flag is carried by a flag-bearer in clothes typical for his class and political orientation.

A flag divided vertically, the hoist half black-white-red, the fly half black-red-gold; in the center a vertical stripe of red with a black swastika. The flag-bearer is typical upper middle-class (with a top-hat). Caption: "Dreieinig, minnig, treu, das Hakenkreuz ist auch dabei" ("Triune, lovely, faithful, the swastika takes also part"). The style of the captions is that of the moral lessons of that and earlier times, hence they are sort of in verse. Like, "Triune, and lovely, and true; the swastika is in it too".

The style of the captions is that of the moral lessons of that and earlier times, hence they are sort of in verse. Like, "The merchant ensign of our nation, had undergone a transformation".

A flag divided vertically, the hoist half black-white-red, the fly half black-red-gold; the canton red. The flag-bearer is a social democrat. Caption: "Mit roter Socigösch geziert ist hier die Einigung vollführt" ("Decorated with a red Soci jack, the unity is executed"). Source: Kuhn 1991 [kuh91].
Marcus Schmöger, 5 March 2002

The style of the captions is that of the moral lessons of that and earlier times, hence they are sort of in verse. Like, "With a red Soci-Jack's addition, is here the unity's completion".

Flag proposal for the centrists

A church flag, hanging vertically from a crossbar, divided vertically black-red-gold-black-white-red, with fringes at the bottom. The flag-bearer is a Catholic priest, thus signifying the Center party (Zentrum). Caption: "6 Farben, 5 bei den Chinesen, so was ist noch nicht dagewesen" (6 colours, 5 have the Chinese, this is without precedent). Source: Kuhn 1991 [kuh91].

Just taking a break from going through the music before the concerts. I ran into this page "Flags in a 1926 caricature in Kladderadatsch". These entries have my translations in rhyme, made to better give the same impression as the German. This one is a bit odd, because while most of them were forgettable (They are my style, but I didn't recall them individually), the Chinese one was a bit curious, and the numbers didn't seem to match.
So, I not only did the rhyme, but I originally also mentioned that the original rhyme had the numbers reversed, and we went a bit into the close relation between colours and stripes in Germany as well. That's the reason the text speaks of six colours while there are only four.

Flag proposal for the communists

A red flag with a black five-pointed star in the center, a small black-red-gold canton in the upper hoist, and a small black-white-red canton in the lower fly. The flag-bearer is a young communist. Caption: "Die letzte Ölung ist vollbracht, wenn Sowjet-Deutschland wart gemacht" ("The extreme unction is executed, when Soviet Germany is made"). Source: Kuhn 1991 [kuh91].
Marcus Schmöger, 5 March 2002

The style of the captions is that of the moral lessons of that and earlier times, hence they are sort of in verse. Like, "The final blessing is received, when Soviet Germany is achieved" or "All our troubles will have passed, when Soviet Germany comes at last".
