Overview

El Tambo is a municipality in the Nariño Department. It was founded on 22 January 1573 by Julián Chingua and became a municipality on 22 January 1870 by ordinance no. 22.
The flag of El Tambo is white and on part of it, next to the hoist, there is a yellow-red stylized sun following the municipality nickname "Hospedaje del Sol" (lodging of the sun).

"A white rectangle, at hoist a smaller, centered yellow rectangle charged with a sun at hoist.
White means purity, peace and serenity, also in relation with the colour of the "nardo", the emblematic flower of the region.
Red means value, struggle, nobleness, contrasting with the red colour dominant in the paths and trails of the local lanscape.
The sun symbolizes the pleasant weather of the municipality and its sundowns, which are exceptionally beautiful in relation with the geographic structure of the region, and have yielded to this land the nickname of "Lodging of the Sun".

Another website dedicated to El Tambo shows a different representation of the flag, while copying the description from the municipal website.
The "nardo" is shown on the same website as a bell-shaped flower, white, yellow or red, grown and sold by several local families to the neighbouring town of Pasto (43 km) and otherwise in Columbia. The main use of these flowers is the decoration of religious monuments. Accordingly, the "nardo" was officially recognized as the municipal flower.

This "nardo" is probably a relative of the Indian nard (Nardostachys grandiflora DC., Family Valerianaceae), a.k.a spikenard, a plant of Himalayan origin used in Ayurvedic medicine, ointments and perfumes, and threatened by overharvesting.
