Municipality

The municipality of Otacílio Costa (16,348 inhabitants in 2010; 84,658 ha) is located 320 km west of Florianópolis.

Otacílio Costa originates in a general store named Casa Branca (White House), established by Lauro Araújo in a wooden house painted in white, located on a plot owned by Luiz Daboite. The place was subsequently known as Encruzilhada; located on the road to Curitibanos, the place became a popular place of rest for tropeiros.
Most of the area was then acquired by the writer, journalist and politician Otacílio Costa.
The district of Otacílio Costa was established by State Law No. 419 promulgated on 28 July 1959, to be elevated a municipality, separating from Lages, by State Law No. 6,069 promulgated on 10 May 1982.
