Municipality

The municipality of Sapucaia do Sul (138,357 inhabitants in 2015; 5,831 ha) is located 20 km of Porto Alegre.

Sapucaia do Sul is named for Fazenda Sapucaia, aka Fazenda del Cerro, established in 1737 by Antônio de Souza Fernando. His son-in-law, Francisco Pinto Bandeira, owned the adjacent Fazenda Guaixinin-Sapucaia.
Connected to Porto Alegre by a railway line, Sapucaia became in the 1930s a place of leisure highly priced by the capital's upper classes. The building of road BR2 (today, BR116) boosted the town's industrialization, which was at the time São Leopoldo's 7th district.
The municipality of Sapucaia do Sul was established on 14 November 1961.
