About the Flag

The municipality of Santo Antônio do Sudoeste (20,261 inhabitants in 2020; 32,565 ha) is located on the border with Argentina, 650 km south-west of Curitiba.

Santo Antônio do Sudoeste was first settled in 1902 by two Paraguayans, Lucca Ferera and João Romero, who initiated exportation of yerba mate to neighboring Argentina. The emergence of a permanent settlement, in 1912, is credited to a group of colonists led by Afonso Arrachea. In the 1920s, Lucca Ferera established the Pastoriza company to "industrialize" yerba mate extraction. He coined the name of the town, as a tribute both to his son and his patron saint, St. Anthony.
The elevation of Santo Antônio do Sudoeste to a district of Clevelândia and the opening of roads attracted several farmers from Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. The municipality of Santo Antônio do Sudoeste was established by State Law No. 5,322 promulgated on 10 May 1951 and inaugurated on 14 December 1952.

The flag of Santo Antônio do Sudoeste is divided per bend green-yellow, charged in the center with a white disc inscribing the municipal coat of arms.
The coat of arms in the center of the flag symbolizes the municipal government and the circle where it is applied represents the town as the seat of the municipality.

The Samnite shield, used to represent the arms of Santo Antônio do Sudoeste, was the first style of shield introduced in Portugal, by French influence, evoking the Latin race, colonizer and main builder of the nation.
The mural crown that superimposes it, yellow with eight towers, only five of them visible in perspective view, identifies a domain's coat of arms and classifies a 2nd rank town, seat of a county.
The blue color of the shield field is the heraldic symbol of justice, perseverance and loyalty.
The pine, the swine and the tractor indicate the existing material resources that guarantee the development of the municipality and the well-being of its people.
The shield is supported by soybean and maize plants, the main products of the generous and fertile land that supply food to the inhabitants.
