About the Flag

The municipality of Japira (4,910 inhabitants in 2010; 18,914 ha) is located 200 km north-west of Curitiba.

Japira emerged around the railway station of Japyra, inaugurated on 15 November 1924 on the Barra Bonita-Rio do Peixe line. Colonel Joaquim Pedro de Oliveira, who had planted in 1915 the region's first coffee grove, offered plots to establish a new settlement.
The district of Japira was established by Law No. 93 promulgated on 19 September 1948, to be elevated a municipality by Decree Law No. 790 promulgated on 14 December 1951, separating from Tomazina and Ibaiti. The new municipality was inaugurated on 14 December 1952 with Colonel Joaquim Pedro de Oliveira as its first Mayor.
Japira is named for a black and red bird spotted by the early colonists, known to the natives as japuyra.
