Flag for Gerli by the Movement of Autonomy of Gerli

Flag of Gerli
by Olivier Touzeau, 05 Apr 2005

Gerli does not exist as a separated Partido (District) of the Province of Buenos Aires nowadays It is the “border area” between two different provincial districts: Lanús and Avellaneda.

There is a group of neighbors of Gerli that do want to create a new subdivision in the Province of Buenos Aires, that would be named “Partido de Gerli” (Gerli District). To do that, both districts (Lanús and Avellaneda) would loose a part each in their “border” area, and the new district would be formed with those areas.

This group of neighbors is named “Movimiento por la Autonomía de Gerli or MAGe” (Movement for the Autonomy of Gerli). This group has designed the flag as a symbol of Gerli.

Six designs were presented and students of several schools of of the Gerli area (of both Lanús and Avellaneda districts) voted for one of them. The flag was elected on Sunday March 31, 2002 and appeared for the first time in the celebration of 93 years of Gerli Town. The colors are the ones of the Argentine National Flag and of the sporting club Sportivo Gerli (sky blue and white) and the black color of the sporting clubs of Gerli El Porvenir and Villa Modelo.

In the central stripe there is a silhouette of an ombú tree known as “Ombú del Preciado”. The ombú tree is a classic symbol of the Pampas plains.

So until an official Gerli District would exist, this flag could be considered then a non-official flag, or a kind of claim flag.
